Ferguson's slam sends Explorers past Shells

Marquette Catholic's Logan Sternickle started and picked up the win against the Shells on Wednesday at Roxana Park. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Explorers.

And those six runs in the first carried the Explorers to a 7-3 victory over the Roxana Shells in a nonconference game at Roxana Park. Marquette is 17-8. Roxana is 7-16.
Ferguson’s grand slam capped the Explorers’ six-run first. Roxana would cut the deficit in half with single runs in the first, third and fifth innings, but could not keep its losing streak from reaching seven in a row. Connor House had two RBI for the Shells. Elias Thies started and went five innings to take the loss.
Logan Sternickle started and went three innings to get the win for the Explorers. Hayden Sherman finished to earn a four-inning save, allowing one run on two hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Sherman and Charlie Fahnestock each had two hits for Marquette, which outhit the Shells 7-6 while extending its winning streak to six games in a row.

The Marquette Baseball program is regarded as one of the best in the region and is proud of its winning tradition, including 2 State Championships and 8 "Elite Eight" State Finals appearances. The team finished 3rd in the IHSA State Tournament in 2012. The Explorers play their home games at Gordon Moore Park, which is regarded as one of the best high school facilities in the area.
