Alton Marquette boys basketball coach Steve Medford said there is no real secret why his team has had success this season.
"If the other teams can't score, they can't win," Medford said.
The Explorers (15-2) have allowed an average of 40 points a game and have only given up 50 or more points three times.
Since Medford took over the Alton Marquette program seven seasons ago, he said defense has been the key.
"That's kind of what we preach there," Medford said. "That's been a big thing. It's been a staple of our program since I've been there. It's something I always preach. But it becomes something, us as a staff, that we demand. I think that's part of it."
"You're not going to be able to shoot well every single game, but something you can do well every single game is play really hard on defense and give a great effort," Marquette junior guard Sammy Green said. "We all work on defense a lot. It's one of the main points of our game, because we know that we can score, but one of the things we have to focus on is locking down other teams."
