In just two seasons directing the Explorers, Angleton has seen two Class 4A playoff appearances. After going 6-4 a year ago, Marquette improved to 7-3 in Angleton’s second season.
The Explorers were also the Prairie State Conference champs in 2016, going 7-0 on the league slate after starting out 0-2 in non-conference play. The biggest catalyst for the strong conference push was a dynamic defensive line.
After allowing a rushing touchdown during the first half of Week 2 to Mater Dei, the starting Marquette D-line kept the opposition’s ground attack out of the end zone the rest of the regular season.
Unfortunately, the Explorers bowed out of the postseason in the first round for the second time in Angleton’s regime. But after being routed on the road by Rochester in ‘15, Marquette played host to Taylorville in ‘16 and owned a 24-15 lead at halftime. The Tornadoes outscored the Explorers 17-0 in the second half to spoil their attempt for their first playoff victory since 2012.
In two seasons with Marquette, Angleton (13-7) owns a .650 winning percentage.
Moore coached his fourth season with the Explorers in 2016, advancing to the Class 2A state tournament for the second year in a row.
The quest for some state hardware fell a little short for Marquette, unfortunately. The Explorers tied for seventh place at state. They finished in seventh place outright in 2015.
They were 17-1 in dual meets — the lone loss coming to 3A state qualifier Edwardsville — during the ‘16 campaign and had a plethora of tournament success. Marquette won the Alton Tee-Off Classic and the Catholic Tournament, while also winning small-school titles at the Madison County Tournament and the Dick Gerber Invitational.
Once the postseason rolled around the Explorers continued their dominance, winning both the 2A Roxana Regional at Belk Park Golf Course and the Mattoon Sectional at the Mattoon Golf and Country Club.
They won their regional crown by 58 strokes and their sectional title by 22 shots.
The Explorers accomplished a program first in 2016 — winning a regional championship under Walsh, making her the AdVantage News Girls’ Golf Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Marquette carded a 359 to win the Class A Marquette Regional at Alton’s Spencer T. Olin Golf Course by 22 strokes.
The Explorers had advanced to state as a team before and even have an individual state champion from 2002 in Mary Ellen Jacobs, but had never won a postseason tournament prior to ‘16.
Marquette won the Sages State Preview at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur during the regular season and finished in a tie for fifth at the Marquette Blast-Off Classic at Spencer T. Olin, also.
Unfortunately, the Explorers finished eighth at the Salem Sectional and failed to advance an individual to state. Marquette has only advanced to state as a team once, in 2000.
