Explorers hold on, hand Hawks first defeat

The Marquette Explorers handed the Carrollton Hawks their first girls basketball defeat of the season Saturday afternoon.

The Explorers got 17 points from Madi Connors and 13 from Lauren Fischer to beat the Hawks 49-48 in Carrollton. Marquette improves to 3-5. Carrollton is 5-1.

The Explorers built a 23-20 halftime lead and took a 37-36 edge to the fourth quarter. Carrollton got off a potential game-tying shot at the buzzer, but it did not fall and the Explorers escaped.

Emily Struble scored the Hawk’s first 11 points and finished with a team-leading 15. Hannah Krumwiede scored 11 points and Hannah Robinson added nine for Carrollton.
