The seeds are in and several area teams came away with top three slots in their respective IHSA Class 1A girls sub-sectional rankings.
Marquette Catholic received the top nod in Sub-Sectional A of the Belleville Althoff Sectional Tournament. The Explorers, who captured the 2011 1A state championship, were second in 2009 and finished third in 2013, are 7-5-2 following a 1-1 tie with New Lenox Providence Saturday in the Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin Tournament
“We’re playing a tough schedule, like Marquette has always done,” Marquette coach Steve Mitchell said. “Right now, finishing is a challenge sometimes, but we’re getting strong efforts against really strong teams.”
Regional quarterfinals around the state will be played May 6-7, semifinals May 10-11 and finals on May 13-14. Sectional action will begin May 20, super-Sectionals are set for Mat 24 and the state finals are set for May 27-28 at North Central College in Naperville. Specific pairings and schedules will be released later.
Class 2A and Class 3A seedings have not yet been released.
Behind the Explorers in Sub-Sectional A is Breese Mater Dei at No.2 , followed by Breese Central, Roxana at No. 4, Father McGivney of Glen Carbon, Salem, Olney, East Alton-Wood River and Metro East Lutheran.
Earlier this week, No. 3 Central and No. 4 Roxana battled to a tie.
In games against other teams in Sub-Sectional A, Marquette is 3-0, including a 1-0 win at Mater Dei, a 3-0 win over Roxana and a 7-0 win over EA-W.
In Sub-Sectional B, Columbia drew the top seed, followed by Althoff at No. 2, Waterloo Gibault, Freeburg, Harrisburg, Wesclin, Anna-Jonesboro and Massac County.
Meanwhile, in the Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional, four Telegraph-area teams will take part in Sub-Sectional B, including Carlinville, Staunton, Gillespie and Southwestern.
Carlinville drew the No. 3 seed in Sub-Sectionl B behind No. 1 Litchfield and No. 2 Pana. The Cavies are 12-6 on the season. Hillsboro is the No. 5 seed, followed by Staunton, Greenville, Gillespie and Southwestern.
In a power-packed Sub-Sectional A of the SH-G Sectional, Quincy Notre Dame drew the top seed, followed by SH-G at No. 2 and Pleasant Plains No. 3. North Mac is No. 4, followed by Springfield Lutheran, Beardstown, Auburn, Macomb and Athens.
